At TEAM ASCENSION, we are very serious about our training methodology. Core fundamentals and proper technique are instilled and practiced thoroughly in order to provide students with a SOLID grasp of the material so that it can be used at high functionality in REALISTIC situations. Proper postures and positioning are developed early in the students’ training, which cultivates a smooth transition game and prepares students for more advanced material. Techniques and principles are taught in a conceptual format, so that they can be grasped easier and made specific as students become more comfortable with the material.

Different body and personality types are a welcome challenge to any instructor that works from a conceptual framework; the beauty is that there is a game for everybody—all we have to do is find out what works for a person in any given situation once we have a thorough working knowledge of a martial art’s core fundamentals. As students demonstrate progression, they are able to advance to higher levels.

bjj-1BEGINNERS.

Students with little to no experience in martial arts will benefit from learning in an environment geared to their level of knowledge. The core basics are introduced in our Beginners classes, which include correct postures for every position, key applications for self-defense and practical drills and exercises that will encourage proper movement, breathing and positional awareness. The aim of our Beginners classes is to provide students with base techniques and an elementary strategy designed to equip them with the necessary tools for advancement to the next level.

bjj-2INTERMEDIATE.

Students with a solid working foundation of the basics will have the opportunity to put these techniques and concepts to practical use in our Intermediate classes. These classes build upon students’ basic techniques through repetitions, isolation drills, combinations and sequences designed to promote RAPID GROWTH. Whether our students have a basic understanding or if they are already well-versed in their training, these classes help to instill solid positioning and to develop good transition skills for EVERY CONCEIVABLE POSITION OR SITUATION encountered. Moreover, students will find that the Intermediate classes EXTREMELY helpful in developing a style of training more specific to their body type and personality; the training becomes more specific during this stage.

ADVANCED.

Students must display a minimal skill level in order to take part in our Advanced classes. These classes are designed to provide more advanced students an opportunity to train with opponents of comparable skill level to their own. The NEWEST and MOST INNOVATIVE techniques will be studied and tested in an open and friendly yet COMPETITIVE environment.

COMPETITION.

Preparatory classes for competition are open to students of all levels that express the desire to compete. These classes are regularly held during our competition seasons and provide all students with the most innovative strategies, drills and exercise routines pertinent to SUCCESS in competition.

MORE ABOUT BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, established in the early 20th century, derives its roots from Japan. Introduced by Mitsuo Maeda, a groundwork specialist who emigrated to Brasil in 1914, the art was passed along to the Gracie family. Gastao Gracie's eldest son, Carlos Gracie, became Maeda's first Brazilian student in 1917. He taught the art to his brothers, who have passed it on from generation to generation since its inception.

Carlos Gracie's eldest son, Carlson, represented the art in numerous "No-Holds-Barred" competitions in Brasil, eventually establishing his own team, Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu, which rose to prominence and became dominant in competition over the years. One of Carlson Gracie's most senior students, Marcus Soares, emigrated to Canada in 1997 to establish a presence for the Carlson Gracie Team in Canada. Even with his passing in 2006, Grandmaster Carlson Gracie (has left a legacy that carries to this day through his senior representative, Mestre Marcus Soares (7th Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and represented in Toronto by Mestre Soares' senior student, Professor Omar Salvosa (2nd Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu became highly popularized through the success of Royce Gracie in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) early events in the 1990s. At the time, cross-training among martial arts disciplines was not as prominent as in today's Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events. As such, the dominance of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu against other pure styles of martial arts became noteworthy to the general public. As a discipline, it is championed by its non-violent approach to subduing larger and stronger opponents without relying on the use of striking techniques. Rather, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners utilize leverage and superior positioning to control opponents, mostly on the ground due to the nature of most combative situations. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner's main weapons are joint locks, since the style demands a mastery of groundfighting. This martial arts philosophy and approach makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu an excellent choice for self-defense and arguably among the most effective and practical disciplines for people of smaller stature (women and children).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was pioneered in Ontario by a small group of practitioners in the early 1990s, of which Omar Salvosa was a key member. He competed in the some of the first competitions, winning five (5) National titles from 1996-2000 and represented Canada in the World Kobudo Federation's Championship of Jiu Jitsu, winning Gold twice in 1999 and 2000. Salvosa was also among Canada's first International MMA competitors with bouts in France (Ultrafight) and Japan (Shooto). He established his own team in 1998, which evolved into Team Ascension, an independent branch of Team Soares and Carlson Gracie Canada.

As a legacy to the hard work established by its earliest practitioners, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu now enjoys a strong competitive base in Ontario. Its official sanctioning body is the Ontario Jiu Jitsu Association (OJA), of which Professor Salvosa is a contributing board member. The Ascension BJJ Open is the annual competition hosted by Omar & Beverley Salvosa since 2006 that draws competitors from Canada and the United States. Its inaugural event was held in commemoration of Grandmaster Carlson Gracie (August 13th, 1932 to February 1st, 2006), just days after his passing.

Team Ascension continues to be a dominant force in the Toronto BJJ scene, winning as the OJA's top competition team multiple times. Some of Professor Salvosa's students have become official representatives of Team Ascension, with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies in Trenton (Prof. Jason Chin-Leung, Black Belt), Niagara (Chris & Blayne Bonfoco) and North York (Joel Gelfand). As the team continues to grow, students represent their martial arts discipline, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, with a strong sense of integrity. We continue to be humbled by the endless journey of personal development that is facilitated through our understanding and diligent practice of the martial arts; in our self-realization, we evolve.... we ASCEND.
