Congratulations to a wonderful man and an incredible family, the Salvosas and Professor Omar Salvosa!!! When Chris Bonfoco and I met Omar in 2008 we knew right away that he has a special gift to inspire and connect with everyone he meets. We have since felt blessed and privileged to be part of his team, Team Ascension, and to continue to grow the spirit of his team for Omar, Beverly and all its members. Today after 10 + years off competing he performed at the IBJJF No Gi Worlds, and placed first. Words cannot express how happy I am for him reaching new levels of his training and enjoying the fruits of his labour. Thank you now and forever for your support, guidance, inspiration and dedication. You, your family, and your teams sacrifices truly pave the way for us all to know our deep potential, and we are happy to celebrate with you an excellent effort!

Professor Omar Salvosa, Gold in No Gi Worlds which he entered on week's notice after 10 years out of competition. Medal or no medal, I am truly inspired by this man and his passion and love for jiu jitsu and for sharing this every day with his students- it is inspiring to see him take on this challenge, and to see him come out on top of the pack. This is why I train team Ascension and team Carlson Gracie. So proud to be part of this family. Oss.

After 10 years off the competition scene my Professor Omar Salvosa stepped back on the mats at Worlds this weekend and took gold. Not only has he shown his jits is legit but he has also shown what his team already knows...that his spiritual and mental game is world class as well. Congrats. I'm so proud to train w Team Ascension.

Team Ascension's Diverse Membership: A Family.

Quite easily, our proudest achievement at the Salvosa Jiu-Jitsu Academy is not the accolades of succesful competitiors and team titles that we nonetheless continue to capture, but the unique and diverse training atmosphere that pervades all of our classes.

Some martial arts clubs are evidently narrow when it comes to their membership picture: only kids, only fighters, only people in chiseled shape, only young men "vying" for the UFC, only cool people (the worst!). We can definitely lay claim to a truly diverse student body at the Salvosa Jiu-Jitsu Academy, aka Team Ascension Headquarters Toronto. Depending on the scheduled class that you visit, you will see the Little Ninjas (ages 4-6), BJJ for Teens and all ages in between. You will see an introductory class for absolute beginners, or an intense training session boasting some of the highest talent in the country. You will see a dedicated class just for women, numerous co-ed classes where men and women train together in genuine camaraderie and equality; classes for beginners, intermediate or competitors. You will see classes focused on self-defense, competition, Wrestling takedowns, pure conditioning and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitors preparing for their next fight. You will see mothers encouraging their sons in one class, then you will see the same mothers training a couple hours later. You will see outstanding sets of brothers and sisters getting along in ways you could only dream of at home. At tournaments, you will see fathers and daughters competing at the same event, just a few short hours apart--hugs of joy and encouragement, new bonds that you couldn't imagine possible.

Our teachers are held to a high standard of mentorship and although no one is perfect, we value our daily vibe more than any other pursuit. High level competitors work alongside aspiring beginners all the time and there are no big egos or primadonnas recognized nor encouraged in an atmosphere that emphasizes team first over individuals and clique groups.

Firmly rooted as one of the few, genuine pioneer teams of Jiu-Jitsu in Ontario since its inception in the 1990s with a proven record of success and an authentic lineage with the Carlson Gracie Team, we have a distinct training environment that our competitors will find almost impossible to reproduce. If you value the vibe, perhaps Team Ascension is the family training atmosphere that you have been searching for. Visit us TODAY to FEEL THE DIFFERENCE!

The Achievement of A New Level

During the month of August 2011, Team Ascension students gathered at the academy to demonstrate the skills they had been honing over the past several months in an official grading ceremony.

Students in the Little Ninjas programme (ages 4-6) demonstrated their ability to grasp basic techniques and exercises, not to mention their outstanding mental training by showing discipline and focus.

On August 13th, students in our BJJ Kids (7-10) and BJJ Teens (11-14) programmes moved up in rank by performing techniques practiced throughout their curriculum.  It is remarkable to see their effectiveness in realistic situations with live resistance and a testament to the strong foundation being built through consistency.  Some of the graduates from our children's programmes have become highly respected (and feared) opponents in the Adult classes; further proof that with each graduation, a new benchmark is demanded--and results are always quick to follow!

We culminated our Summer Grading session on Saturday, August 20th with the testing of students from our Women's Programme, Adults Fundamentals (White Belt) and Adults Intermediate/Advanced (Blue Belt & higher).

As a quick recap, Professor Salvosa promoted 3 new Purple Belts, 10 new Blue Belts, 9 Yellow-Striped Belts in our Little Ninjas programme, and numerous graduates in our Kids and Teen programmes.  Congratulations to everyone on attaining this meaningful achievement!

The grading process is journey and recollection of all the concepts, strategies and minute technical details that students practice diligently through repetitions, drills and classes.  The results are harvested when these techniques are successfully executed during live sparring or winning in competition.  The reward is humbling; students are given a new rank (if earned) and a new journey unfolds with a more complex set of challenges and responsibilities.

Team Ascension is a complete martial arts school.  We have classes for all ages and gender.  During the grading session, teammates pull together to achieve promotions collectively.  Some students are rewarded with a new belt, others are rewarded with stripes--stages within each belt.  Regardless of the promotion, there is huge boost of morale throughout the entire club, a renewed sense of vigour towards each repetition or sparring match and the euphoria that people outside of martial arts might not comprehend.  It is another proud moment for students of Salvosa Jiu-Jitsu and Team Ascension.  Thank you for representing our team with dignity and congratulations on the life lessons that are learned along the road.  We continue onward, ASCEND TO THE NEXT LEVEL, because we are in this forever.... Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts FOR LIFE.  One Love.
