Getting started in martial arts in Toronto / Scarborough

Congratulations, you've decided to start your training journey with TEAM ASCENSION, the best place to learn MARTIAL ARTS in TORONTO! What can you expect to experience in your first few weeks of Jiu-Jitsu?

MANAGING EXPECTATIONS

Regardless of the martial art you are practicing, there are certain tools and strategies that are common among them. Most importantly, a balanced and mature mindset will help you to get off to a fresh start and to cultivate some positive training habits that will stay with you throughout your career (and LIFE) of training.

EMPTY YOUR CUP each time you enter the dojo. If your cup is full, then what can you possibly expect to learn from today's lesson? How can your coaches or training partners provide you with any relevant and useful insight that can make an immediate difference in your skill level if you are not open to hearing it? Whether you already possess experience through prior martial arts training, or if you are already in great shape from previous sports, or if your chess game is just THAT good that you believe you can strategize among the most adept Black Belts in the game today.... you will not move too far from your starting point if you do not allow the humbling process to take you into the proper mental space where you can seamlessly receive guidance. The martial arts journey is truly a gift; live and breathe it, enjoy the health and wisdom you will be receiving through this commitment to training and watch in surprise as this outlook helps you to GAIN RAPID RESULTS!

RESPECTING YOUR BODY

Your body is like a machine and unfortunately, some machines get overworked. When your body is fatigued and pushed to its limits, it ceases to run efficiently, breaks down and becomes susceptible to injury. While you should be commended for your enthusiasm to try all the exercises at the proficiency of your more experienced and conditioned peers, you must keep in mind that lasting results are gradually attained. We've had numerous students that couldn't complete the opening warmups for weeks--some took months--but their sense of PRIDE AND SATISFACTION THAT DERIVED FROM THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENT IS PRICELESS! Unlike the professional fighters on Pay-Per-View, you need to allow yourself the time to be a student of your own body rhythms before you can perform at that level. Certain joints move in specific directions and they have limits. Muscles are meant to be pushed to an optimal limit before they become overworked; as you listen to your body while it adjusts to our training system, you will come to appreciate how to make it efficient. Ease into all exercises and drills, gradually increasing your effort and resistance in subsequent classes. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOU WILL BE FLYING!

IT'S AS SIMPLE AS FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS!

That's a funny statement, but ironically one of the key areas that can cause students to stagnate when they do not adhere to it. In our classes, we aim for a minimum of 90% transmission rate. What does that mean? Every concept and technique within each class provides a certain level of detail and requires some dedicated repetition in order to implant it into your muscle memory. When you're learning something you're passionate about, especially in martial arts, you will have a seemingly unshakable tendency to speed up, try variations or start sparring when should be drilling! Unfortunately, sometimes it will take months or years before you might notice that certain aspects of your repertoire are incomplete, too slow or forced--this is easily attributed to an improper approach to learning and practice. There's plenty of Open Mat time following each class when you can practice any theme you wish or when you can move into higher-resistance sparring. It's important to respect the lesson time so that YOUR MIND AND BODY ARE PRESENT AND SYNCHRONIZED so that you receive the full transmission as it is intended (or at least 90% of it).

AFTER THE HONEYMOON....

Have you ever joined a fitness gym as a New Year's resolution? First couple of weeks, you trained harder than ever, five times each week, then you missed a couple of your intended training days and by the next month, you were training once a week if you were lucky.... unfortunately, by March you weren't training anymore and anytime you were reminded of a gym or saw someone out on a run, you felt that overwhelming sense of guilt. We know for a fact that this is not an over-exagerrated dramatization, but a reality for numerous people in our culture.

There's a silver lining in relating in this experience because at Team Ascension, we have a unique system that takes all of this into consideration. MOTIVATION is key and we are dedicated to keeping our students ENERGIZED AND GOAL-ORIENTED so that as a member of our team, it is your mandate to ACHIEVE RESULTS.
